A New Champion!

Mom and I had a fun day on Friday at the Cardigan Welsh Corgi Club of SoCal Specialties. At the morning specialty, judged by breeder judge, Deborah Anthony, Bebe was Winners Bitch for a 4 pt. major to finish her championship. It was very exciting and we got a cute pillow to commemorate the event. I'll post her win pic when I get it, can't wait to see how it turned out.

A NEW TITLE!!!!

Here is our friend, Amy, with Oliver, who just earned his Utility title (UD) on Saturday, December 10th!!! Mom and I are so proud of this team. Amy, Mom and I went to the Shoreline show in Costa Mesa on Friday, and Oliver attempted to get his title there, but made a mistake so didn't qualify. Bebe, Gidget and Electra also went and strutted their stuff in the breed rings, Bebe was Reserve. which was fun. Amy and Oliver headed to Woodley Park on Saturday for the Hollywood Obedience Club trial and after earning his Open FAST title in agility, they had a successful turn in the Utility A class. And he earned first place in the class as well. Kudos to both Amy and Oliver for all the hard work it takes to earn a Utility Dog title!!!!!

I just got an email from Roberta who has three Rincon Cardis, Chloe has earned her AKC therapy dog title, another wonderful achievement!

Show Update

Mom and I went to dog shows this weekend in the City of Industry. San Gabriel Valley KC and Antelope Valley KC held their shows at the Industry Hills Equestrian Center. Amy joined us, with Oliver and Gidget. (you should have seen the car packed with 4 dogs and 3 people and all that is needed for two days of dog shows and a night in a La Quinta.) Decker was Best of Breed on Saturday and got the Select ribbon on Sunday, so she is a bit closer to her Grand Championship. Electra and Gidget both showed well, and Oliver had two almost successful attempts at his third leg of his Utility title.

Here are the girls who came from Florida. Top to bottom, Electra, Piper, Connie and Belle. Electra will be staying here at Rincon, Piper is now living in Thousand Oaks, and may be seen in the show ring, which is fun. She has chickens and cats and a horse to get to know for now. Belle and Connie will be going to their new homes in Thousand Oaks and Pasadena later this week. We journeyed down to Long Beach yesterday, to go the the LBKC show and also to sort puppies. My extremely knowledgeable buddy, Barb helped me to sort the puppies, going over structure with each one. We had quite an audience of other Pembroke and Cardigan folks, and it made for a very fun afternoon. And to top it off, Bebe got another point towards her championship!

The Puppies Are Coming!

Two of Charlie's puppies are coming to CA on Tuesday. They'll be 11 weeks old. I'll decide which one to keep and then place the other one.

Here is Bebe, (Rincon Beach Blanket Bingo) who won on Sunday in Pomona. She was Winners, Best of Winners and Best Opposite, for a 4 pt. major. She now has both her majors and needs only 6 singles to finish. Yay, Bebe. Our judge on Sunday is a Cardigan breeder, Deborah Anthony, so a nice win indeed.

Charlie (Rincon Channel Isles Charlotte) had her puppies on Tuesday. She had 5 girls and 1 boy. Charlie was bred to Brady (Ch. Pinemeade Shine On RN) who is a tri, but all the puppies are red/white. I can't wait to see them in person. Brady is also Gidget's dad. Anne reports that all the puppies are gaining steadily and that Charlie is doing well, too.

Bakersfield Adventure

Mom and I (and our friend Kathy) took Bebe to the Kern Co. KC show on Sat. We also took Gidget (Highgrove Surf's Up at Rincon) along so she could participate in the match that evening. Kathy brought Speck (a 4 mos. old Parson puppy) and Wyatt, her 6 year old Parson boy. Bebe got our day off to a great start, going Best of Breed from the puppy class, which earned her a 3 pt major. We were thrilled to say the least. She showed very well in the group, and we were all very proud of her. Kathy showed Speck and I showed Gidget in the match, and they both showed well. Gidget couldn't understand why she wasn't allowed to stop and eat all the goodies that were on the floor, but she charmed everyone who saw her. I'll post Bebe's win pic when I get it, should be late this week.

The top two pix were taken Saturday afternoon (Feb. 26) on our way home from Wildomar. This was on the 210 fwy just west of Pasadena. Traffic slowed and we all slogged thru the snowy slush. We also hit snow on the 118 fwy east of Simi Valley. Not the usual, that's for sure. The bottom pic was taken from our front yard on Sunday morning (Feb. 20th). It didn't last long but was very pretty early in the morning.

Sunday Morning

Not much to post about here. We took the Pepper pups to the vet on Wed. for their well puppy check-ups, all was well, so that's a good thing. Next hurdle is their eye exams, which we'll do in a week and a half. I gave them their first vaccine on Friday, no reaction to that. Their mum, Pepper, went back to Barb's on Thursday, and will hopefully be off to her new home next week. She's certainly a contender for best dog mom ever! Such a good mom. Decker's in season so the boys are going crazy. Yesterday we took Meg and RJ for a walk along the boardwalk in Ventura, which is very pretty. Kathy O. and Wyatt joined us as Violet's in season at her house. Poor boys!
It's another nice day today, but it's supposed to rain early this week, we'll see.
The hills are so green and lush, and I'm hoping that soon there will be some wildflowers to see.

I talked with Barb today, Pepper's temp has dropped which means delivery should be within 24 hours. Tomorrow is her official due date so she's right on track.

Mom and I took Bebe and Decker to the dog shows in Costa Mesa yesterday. No points in Cardis yesterday, but today Bebe's dad, Roger was WD for a point and then Bebe was BoW for a point as well. Decker was Select yesterday and BoS today, and showed very well her first weekend out as a special!

We'll be heading down to Long Beach on Sunday morning to watch the Cardigan and Pembroke Corgi judging, Parson Russell judging and to work in the Cardigan Meet the Breeds booth. Meg and RJ worked the booth last year, and this year Bebe gets to go along as well. I'm sure they'll all enjoy meeting all the people that come to the show. I'll take some pix when we are there.

Missing Pembrokes

Anyone in the Long Beach/Bellflower/Downey/Compton areas, please be on the lookout for two Pembrokes who are missing. The van they were in was stolen sometime overnight Monday night, with the Pems and two Akitas on board. The Akitas were turned in this morning to a shelter in Downey, we are hopeful the Pems will be turned in as well.
They were staying at the Bellflower Motel 6, in town for the shows in Long Beach today through Sunday.
One of the Pems is a tri, the other red/white. Their handler, Kristina, is heartbroken. I remember our search for one of our Cardigans a few years back, it was not a fun time, but we did find her after 4 days being out on her own.

Thursday, Dec. 2nd: Hooray, the Pems were reunited with Kristina early this morning (1:00AM I'm told) so that's a relief!

Pepper and Brady's Excellent Adventure

My friend Barb and I are leasing a Pembroke named Pepper. She's very sweet, and we hope to have puppies at the end of December. Yesterday, Mom and I drove to Atascadero and bred Pepper to Mr. Brady, (Oliver's dad). Fingers and toes crossed that all goes well.

Match weekend

Mom and I made the trek down to Bloomington for the annual Pembroke club match. The Cardi club joined us and held their match as well. RJ, Bebe and Mighty Mite came along, and I showed Bebe who was best of breed Cardigan, and I tried RJ in the Nov. A Rally class. He did very well considering he's only had 6 or 7 obedience classes. RJ's dad, Roger, also made his debut in Nov. A Rally and did the new obedience class, Beginner Novice and he came away high in trial for the Cardis, Go Roger! I also got to show one of Barb's Gryffin daughters, Franny, and I showed one of her Pem puppies, Summer. Both did well at their first show, and Summer's sister, Sweetie, was best of breed Pem, and best in match!!!
I, of course, forgot to take my camera out of the car, but Mario and Bobbie showed up with Opie, Bebe and Mighty Mite's brother, and Bobbie took a pic of my three hanging out waiting for the action to begin.

Decker and Meg's Excellent Adventure

Wow, what a weekend we just had!!
Mom and I took Decker, Meg, Mr. Darcy and Bebe to Primm, NV for two shows with the hope that we could get Decker or Meg finished. Both needed just one major to get their championships, and there were a couple of gals from AZ who were bringing their Cardi girls to the shows, so we knew we'd have the numbers we needed.
Since we were going I entered Mr. Darcy and Bebe (her first real show) just for fun.
Decker hadn't been in the ring since last November, so I wasn't sure how she'd show, and the show was indoors, which can also be a factor. I shouldn't have worried. They all showed well, and on Saturday, Decker got the nod from the judge. Meg was reserve (first runner-up) and Bebe had fun at her first show. A big thanks to friends Lucille and Eileen, who came over from their rings (Smooth fox terriers and Keeshonds) to help out when all three of my girls won their classes.
To top off the fun for Saturday, Mr. Darcy was Best of Breed, and then got a group 4!!!
Mom and I were certainly glad we'd made the trek. We stayed at the Primm hotel that is attached to the Primm convention center where the show was held, which was nice. The Black Mountain Kennel Club had a nice breakfast and lunch for all the exhibitors on Sat. which was an unexpected surprise.
On Sunday I showed Bebe and Meg, and was thrilled when Meg got the win, for her second major and her championship!
And Mr. Darcy was Best of Breed again, making our day complete.
When I get the pictures we took on Sat. and Sun. I'll scan them and post them.
This Saturday we have the Pembroke/Cardigan match down south, which should be fun.

We took RJ to obedience class tonight, he really enjoyed it.
There is an adorable mini long haired dachshund in the class that he loves, and a rambunctious "labradoodle" who he finds too rambuctious. (it is very, very cute, all off white and tan curls)

A Day in the Desert

Mom, our friends Amy and Kathy, and I ventured over the mountains to Lancaster this morning for the Antelope Valley KC match. We took Bebe and Mighty Mite, and Oliver.
Kathy judged the working breeds and had some very cute Siberian puppies as well as a few other breeds. Amy ran Oliver through the Open obedience class, and Oliver showed just how silly Corgis can be. Mom and I watched from across the park as he acted as if he'd never tried his hand at Open before!!
Mighty Mite learned to walk on a leash and Bebe got to show her stuff in the breed ring.

Another Road Trip.

Mom and I drove down to Barb's yesterday, with Bebe and Mr. Darcy. Took some pix in the afternoon after the temp dropped a bit, (it was 95 when we got there, 66 here at home).
Took a couple of table pix of Bebe, she was very wiggly, and a quick pic of Darcy on the green grass. I also had to take a pic of Barb's silky rooster, he's very funny.

Dog Show Wrap-up

Mom and I spent Friday, Saturday, Sunday and Monday at the dog shows in Santa Barbara. Only 15 minutes from home, what a luxury. Thursday we drove over and set up our "camp". We ended up with 7 EZ-ups with up to 25 dogs in residence at any given time!
Friday I showed Meg and Mr. Darcy, Meg was WB/BoW, Darcy was BoS. Saturday Meg and Mr. Darcy were again shown, same result at Friday. RJ also came since he and Meg were entered in the Breeders Showcase event later in the day. Kathy and Debra's Bella, a Parson Russell, was WB and is now known as Champion Sunrock's Mustang Sally. Bella will now make plans to join her new owner, Ida, in Norway in a couple of months.
Kathy and Debra had two Parson entries in the Breeders Showcase, Lola and Wyatt and Poppit and Turbo. I was supposed to show Lola, and then Debra or Kathy would show Meg, but as luck would have it, both the Herding and Terrier groups were at the same time, so after some scrambling, our friend Diane (Whippets and a Parson) and Suzanne (Border Collies, Parsons) came to the rescue. Suzanne showed Meg and did a great job, we actually were in the ribbons again this year with an Award of Merit. Not the Group 1 we got last year, but I was very pleased to place, many entries didn't. Our friend Lissa had a Parson entry as well, and they all looked very good, though none placed in a very competitive Terrier group.
The SBKC put on a very nice dinner just before the Showcase judging started and the weather this year was absolutely beautiful, the typical August weather that Santa Barbara is famous for.
Sunday, RJ stayed home, but Gryffin came as he was entered in the breed and in the Foreign Bred showcase. It was a first time event, and will need some tweaking for next year, but it was fun and Gryffin showed well. And it was fun to showcase my Welsh Corgi, born in Wales!!!
Mr. Darcy was BoS again, and Meg was RWB.
On Monday we were all pretty tired, but still had fun. Meg was WB/BoW and the puppies got to come, too, since I didn't have Mr. Darcy entered.
They had fun watching the big dogs go by the set-up, and the r/w boy (now known as Andy) got to get some leash practice in. He goes to his new home in Tujunga in 6 days.
No more shows til the end of the month, the hunt for majors for Meg and Decker begins, with both needing one major to finish.

Day Tripping.

Mom, Amy and I took Mr. Darcy, Oliver, and the puppies to visit our friend Barb, in Wildomar, yesterday. It was way too hot, but what can you do? (99 degrees at her house!)
Mr. Darcy got his teeth cleaned (non anesthetic done by another Corgi friend of ours). Now they look very beautiful.
Our friend, Debra, came by to take some pictures of Bosko. Her aunt is interested in him. She lives in Vermont.
The first pic is of the three Gryffin babies, girls on the outside, boy in the middle. He looks very much like our Tina Sparkle, who was also sired by Gryffin. Next is Bosko, relaxing on the grass in the shade.
Barb has two silky chickens, and Bebe was quite entranced by them in the next pic. Next is Mr. Darcy and Oliver hanging out in one of Barb's runs. And then another pic of Bebe.

August update

Bosko, (see below) is now back with us, here at Rincon. It didn't work out at his new home, their other dogs just weren't tolerating him.
He's a cutie.
Our red/white boy has a new home, though he'll be here til after Labor Day as his new person has a trip planned and can't take him until then.
I took RJ to his first obedience class Monday night, he really enjoyed it.
Meg is entered at the upcoming Santa Barbara shows the weekend of the 28th/29th. Shows are Friday, Saturday, Sunday and Monday, hopefully she can earn the last few points she needs to become a champion.
Saturday we are heading down to Wildomar to see Gryffin's litter of puppies, two girls and a boy, born on July 3rd. They'll be 7 weeks old, and should be exceedingly cute. I'll try and remember to take pictures so I have some to post when we get home.

Lompoc KC

Mom and I spent the day at the Lompoc KC show again today, and had a very fun day. First, our friend Lissa's Parson Russell Terrier, Snow, was Winners and her brother, Shiner was Winners Dog. Snow got a three point major so that's fun.
Mr. Darcy was entered today and was Best of Breed, and then RJ was Winners again, to finish his championship, Way to go, RJ!
Mr. Darcy then got a group 4th in a big herding group, which was very exciting.
This picture was taken by Lissa on her cellphone so not great clarity, but better than nothing. Bebe didn't go today, and she was missed. Lots of folks who met her yesterday asked where she was today, and a couple have posted pics they took of her on Facebook and You Tube. Too funny.

A Fine Day.

Had a fun day in Lompoc today at the Lompoc KC show. Meg and RJ both were Winners for a point each. This gives RJ 14 points, one more to go and he's a Champion!
Meg's coat is coming back in, she looked quite nice. Darcy and RJ are entered tomorrow.
Bebe went with us and I think she had no fewer than a hundred people taking her picture, including the Lompoc Record newspaper. She's quite the model!
Our friend Lissa's Parson boy Shiner, was Best of Winners for a 4 point major, so he's well on his way towards his Championship as well.
Fingers crossed that Kathy and Debra's Bella will get the nod tomorrow.
And, on Friday, the kink tail boy went to his new home, he now resides in Long Beach.

15 weeks and counting!

Warm day today, first day we've had sunshine all day long in some time. I took Mr. Darcy to obedience class last night, and he had fun. Maybe we'll tackle rally at some fall shows.

A Very Good Weekend!

We spent the last three days at the shows in Ventura. Friday I showed RJ, and he went Reserve to the major, so, close but no cigar!
Saturday he did get the win, four points, which is very cool. He showed well, and had fun, which is also a good thing. On Sunday, RJ won again, one point this time, as several dogs weren't entered or weren't there, but a point is a point!
Now just two more and he'll be an AKC Champion!!
Meg just needs to grow her coat back and she'll be back in contention, looking for her last 6 points.
Next shows will be in Lompoc at the end of the month, and then the Santa Barbara shows in late August. Let's hope it's not as hot this year at the SB shows as it was last year! June gloom is great dog show weather.
The puppies are getting bigger and bigger and cuter and cuter. The brindle boys are all settling in well in their new homes, with new names of Opie, Bosko and Petey.
I'm still working on a name for my red/white girl, Beebee is a possible (she'd be Rincon Beach Blanket Bingo).

Wedding Day

On Saturday, we went to a wedding. It was quite fun.
Creig's cousin, Ashley, was married at her house in Carpinteria. I made the wedding cake, haven't done one in quite a few years. It was fun. Katie was a bridesmaid, (she's the tall one). Our cousin Martha has a 4 1/2 month old daughter, Coraline, who was the "Flower Petal", she came down the aisle in a decked out wagon, pulled by another cousin, Kyle. (he's 4). They were so cute. Coraline was asleep going down the aisle, but woke up later. A very fun day.

Here are a few of the pictures that our friend, Mary, took on Tuesday morning. Three of the kids whose families live up at Cate School joined us and had great fun posing with puppies and helping round them up when they ventured too far from us. We had the whole outfield of the baseball diamond. The puppies loved racing around on the grass. Thanks to Keller, Kate and Eli for their help! The top two pics are my red/white girl, no name as yet. Corgi Fun Day 2010

We took the puppies to Corgi Fun Day yesterday, set up a pen and then spent the day talking to all the folks who stopped by to see them. They were photographed all day long, and petted and oohed and awed over.

The puppies were 9 weeks old yesterday. They got to play with Elliot, who is 16 months old. He enjoyed them, and they thought he was fun to chase. Elliot belongs to Brian and Beth, who are friends of my daughter, Katie.
I took the picture of them all in a row on Thursday, while they waited for me to bring them their lunch. They had been sleeping and I put the kibble in the bowls and that woke them up!

We are back home from Tustin. Everyone traveled very well, and they were all very glad to be back home!
Each and every eye was just perfect, not a problem in the bunch.
They charmed the office staff, and the other folks in the waiting room.
Now I have to remember to order their microchips so we can get those done, and we'll be done with all the "to dos".

We are off to Tustin today for a visit to the Eye Care for Animals office for CERF exams for the puppies.
Last year we had a really nice gal (Dr. Twitchell) do the eye exams, she came to Barb's house and we did Tina's litter, Salsa's litter and several other dogs were all looked at. Unfortunately, I just learned that Dr. Twitchell died earlier this year.
Hence, the trip today. I've also gone to the Eye Care for Animals in Pasadena, but they weren't doing a CERF clinic until late next month.

First, here is the little red/white boy, who is definitely a pistol (Pistol Pete?) and wouldn't stand for his photo initially. We did finally get him to stand briefly, but not on the happy legs that everyone else used for their side shots! Second is the big r/w boy with the kink at the end of his tail, which is getting harder to see, but still easy to feel. Last in this post is the big r/w boy. My friend Kathy took the pics and we borrowed her happy feet, which helps to get them stacked correctly. I needed to move it a bit for the big r/w girl so she looks a big stuffy in the pic. While we were doing the pictures they got to explore in Kathy's back yard, which they thought was very fun.

A Busy Day

We took the puppies down to Woodland Hills today for their well puppy check-ups.
Dr. Jackson pronounced them all "cute as bugs". She listened to their hearts, (all good), checked their patellas (all good), bites (all good) and the boys all have their parts!
I ordered vaccines today, which will come on Friday, so we'll do them on Friday (they'll be 8 weeks old). We wormed them today as well. They were fairly good on their way down, a bit of crying from a couple of them, but they slept all the way home, and after they ate lunch they slept some more. It was their first car ride since we took them to Barb's to do the dewclaws, and they couldn't see or hear then. I took a box of shavings and each one went potty after the exam, which impressed Dr. Jackson. Such good puppies!
I took the outside pic yesterday, they enjoy going out to run around now.

Oliver (Rincon Oliver Twist, CD, NAP, NJP, RE,) will now add RAE to his list of titles. RAE is an advanced Rally title, which requires that the dog gets 10 Advanced B and 10 Excellent B Rally Q's (one of each on each of 10 days). Oliver and Amy started out the weekend with 6 double Q's and got 4 more this weekend, (Thur, Fri, Sat and Sun.)
Oliver also tried to qualify in Open obedience, but was not successful in that venue, but he did provide some comic relief on occasion. I'll get a new picture soon of Oliver. He and Meg and Mr. Darcy had great fun running around the motel room on Thursday night after the Specialty, they were very fun to watch as they played with great zeal. (we were very tired after working all day putting on the big show) It was really nice to stay the night right there at the show site.

HI all
Sorry for the lack of posts of late. I'm getting ready to chair the Pem Specialty next week, and between making my lists of what needs doing, and feeding puppies, I've been remiss in taking photos.
So here's one I just took. Only seven are visible, (the funny little one is a warthog toy).
They do get to hang out in the dining room some of the time. That transition was fairly uneventful, with only a few of them thinking it was too scary the first day.
They are now eating 4 times a day, moving from ground kibble to regular puppy kibble, with less formula added to it each day.
One of the brindle boys has very blue eyes, (not okay in the show world, but gorgeous nonetheless).

4 weeks old already!

Hard to believe they are 4 weeks old already. Decker still feeds them, but they are up to three meals a day in their little bowls. The best eater; the little red girl, she just starts right in and eats til she's done. Right now they are eating formula, with a bit of crushed kibble mixed in. As the week progresses I'll add more kibble and water to dilute the formula. We'll move out to the dining room in a day or two. Right now I'm a bit under the weather, but I'll get them moved soon.

This was taken yesterday, as they were either eating or done eating. They are all getting quite efficient in their eating. dispatching their tablespoon of formula and ground kibble quite quickly.
I'll probably add lunch tomorrow, right now they get breakfast and dinner. Decker enjoys cleaning the little bowls, of course.

Here are three pictures I took this afternoon. The puppies are starting to really move about and the little red girl escaped from the box last night, I found her at the end of my bed wrapped in a fleece, cozy and warm. Now I have to figure out a barrier to keep them all from escaping! Tomorrow they'll be three weeks old, where does the time go.

Monday Update.

It's a bit blurry, but here is part of the pile of puppies taken a few moments ago. They are all getting bigger and bigger, and yesterday they began to play a bit. One of them tried to bite another on the back, and did the head shake, but it was all in slow motion, so quite amusing to watch. It's hard to believe they are 2 1/2 weeks old already.
Mom found this frog while she was out in the rose garden doing some weeding. It so closely matches the wood chips in color, it's really incredible. I think we'll have lots of frogs this year as we've had almost 20 inches of rain so far, well above our yearly average.
The bird is a green heron, according to Brian. He's perched on the edge of the pool out back which is now a Koi pond. It's actually the third type of heron we've had out back. First to appear last year was a night heron (we think he was a young one) and we have a great blue heron who routinely visits. So far they have left the Koi and gold fish alone, preferring to focus on the mosquito fish (and there are hundreds of those).

I decided to post pics of these roses since they are so pretty right now. We have close to 40 rosebushes here, and Mom spends a lot of time each year working on them. The red one is Veteran's Honor and the bud is just about perfect. Next is Diana, Princess of Wales, also a very pretty bud. The third is California Dreamin, still in its tub as I just got it for Mom for her birthday on Thursday. It was Sunset magazine's rose to buy for '08. Now to figure out where to put it!
On a puppy note, all is well, they are getting cuter each day. I'll post more pics later.

Two Weeks Old Today.

Two weeks old today, how can that be!
Everyone but one has his/her eyes open, the bigger red girl and the biggest boy (r/w) had their open yesterday, and almost all the rest today.
Everyone but the little r/w girl has doubled in birth weight, and she's getting close.
Next thing to watch for, teeth and getting up on all fours.

We lost the little brindle girl today. She started to fade on Saturday, and left us today. I worried about her when she was born since she only weighed 3 5/8 ounces, but she seemed to be hanging in there and gaining along with everyone else.
It's always hard to see them go, especially as I bottle fed her every day.
On a happier note, the others are all doing well, one of the red and white boys is just over a pound now and another is just under. The biggest brindle boy is also just under a pound.
Eyes and ears should open soon.

I finally have a moment to post some new pictures. First is a picture of Decker, feeding her puppies very early Monday morning, (4 am to be exact). This is the first time she fed them in her box, and the most she fed at one time. She still looks a bit uncomfortable (more on that later) but I was thrilled she was finally taking an interest. Later during the day I took one of one of the red puppies snuggled up to Decker, they like to rest by her head after they've eaten. Monday afternoon we loaded Decker and the puppies up in the van and headed back down to the vet's in Woodland Hills. I was worried about her as she was having very strong contractions each time the puppies nursed, and this was causing her to not enjoy nursing them. I've never seen such strong contractions post c-section and she was behaving as if she was still in labor. One of the docs did a quick ultrasound and then gave her a shot of oxytocin and some calcium, both of which helped her almost immediately. Once we got home she was much more relaxed as she nursed, and her fretfulness had stopped as well. The next picture is of the tiny brindle girl, who weighed 3 5/8 ounces at birth, and one of her brindle brothers, who is almost twice her size. She now weighs 4 5/8 ounces which is great, a 27% increase in weight in 4 days. The next picture I just took, one of the red boys, showing his casual side, followed by a group shot of some of them. I'm still doing the clean up duty, but with Decker doing the lion's share of the feeding it is easier. I'm still hoping she'll decide to help with everything but we'll see.

Decker delivered 9 (nine) puppies today via c-section at about 11am. 6 boys and 3 girls. (5 reds, 4 brindles). She's doing well, but hasn't begun to bond yet, which isn't unusual after a section.
She's happy to feed them if I sit with her and put them on, but other than that, she's not yet interested.
8 of them weigh between 6 and 8 ounces, and the brindle girl weighs only 3 5/8 ounces. She's the smallest puppy I've ever had, so we'll see how she fares. So far, she's a fighter.
I'll post pics later, as I have just a few minutes til I go and sit with her again.

The Waiting Game

Here's a pic of Decker that I took in the waiting room at Warner Center. We headed down to Woodland Hills for another progesterone test and a quick ultrasound today because Decker was a bit off this morning and I was uneasy.
All is well, prog. says she's not quite ready, and the ultrasound shows good, strong heartbeats.
While we were there 9 mastiffs and 10 Rhodesian Ridgebacks were born, and another large dog was expected later!

Anyone who guessed 8! 8 puppies seen on the xray, though there was a small debate as to whether or not there is a 9th!
Dr. Jackson was a bit worried that she was panting, ( a sign of impending labor, but I think it was more that she was in a stressful environment, the vet's office) so she did a progesterone test (the prog. level drops as delivery nears, ) and also did a quick ultrasound to check for heartbeats. Heartbeats were good, and her prog. came back at 4.5, which means we are good to go. They will all be surprised if she makes it past Thursday and I'm supposed to call them on Thursday if she hasn't done anything productive.
Several days earlier than I was expecting, so we'll see what happens in the next couple of days.
I have a couple of supplies I have to go and get at the drugstore downtown, and then we are good to go. Her temp hasn't dropped yet, so we are limbo at this point.
I was going to take a picture of the xray, but it wasn't clear enough to really see.
More later when I know more.

Here's the weekly update picture of Decker, though she wasn't in her usual spot at the water bowl. She's gained another 1 1/2 inches and I started monitoring her temperature this morning.
Tuesday morning we'll head down to Woodland Hills for her x-ray. The waiting begins in earnest!

Dog Show Morning

Mom and I, plus RJ, Meg and Mr. Darcy, left this morning at 4;55 am to head to the Kern Co. KC show in Bakersfield. We picked up Amy and Oliver in Ventura and arrived just after 7 am. Oliver was entered in Rally Adv and Rally Exc. as well as Open obed.
He double Q'd in Rally, but didn't Q in obed. Mr. Darcy was Best Opp and RJ got a major reserve. Nothing for Meg today.
It was freezing when we got there but finally warmed up a bit when I was done showing.
We got home about 3:30 and Darcy was happy because he got to meet about 1o new people who thought he was the cutest, most handsome Corgi they'd ever met!
Decker was glad to see us when we got home. She's doing well, I'll start taking temps tomorrow, and take another tummy pic. I made an appt. to have an xray for a puppy count done on Tuesday morning.

7 weeks and counting.

Here is Miss Decker, at 7 weeks along. She measures 26 inches around now, so a gain of an inch and a half this week, and now weighs 32.5 ish pounds (based on my not terribly precise method of weighing the dogs using a laundry basket and my bathroom scale).
All is well, she's still eating well, though yesterday she did look at her kibble and decide not to eat it. but did eat a can of Innova chicken and rice over the course of the day.
This morning she ate some canned food and her kibble, so it's all good.
The second picture is one that our friend Anne, in Florida, sent yesterday. She has Charlie, who is Hermione's daughter, Mr. Darcy's sis, and this is a picture of two of Charlie's boys (Morgan and Sherman) at their recent obedience class graduation. Their brother, Lee, is set to start his show career soon, he's entered in several upcoming shows. They were six months old on St. Patty's day.

Match Fun

Mom and I took RJ and Meg to the Channel City KC match today in Goleta. I couldn't enter them as they both have major points, but it was still worth going and getting some socialization in. (And there's always the raffle) So here are a couple of pictures I took at the match, Meg and RJ and a view of the overall area.
On the Decker front, she's gained another 3 inches this week, up to 24.5 inches around her growing middle. She and Mr. Darcy went on a road trip yesterday, as Mom and I drove down to Wildomar to inventory the Pem club trailer which is stored at our friend Barb's house. I'm the show chair for the upcoming Pembroke Specialty in May (Thursday the 27th) so I needed to know what was available in the way of supplies, and what I'll need to purchase in the meantime.

Don't forget to set your clocks an hour ahead today.
Mom and I took RJ, Meg and Mr. Darcy to the Apple Valley show yesterday in Victorville.
It was very cold, and exceedingly windy (I hate wind) but RJ managed to make the drive worthwhile by going BoW for 2 points. Meg was Reserve with an entry of 5. Mr. Darcy showed well but didn't do anything.
I measured Decker this morning, she's grown 3 inches since the day we bred her. (to Roger, RJ and Meg's dad) Her mother, Tina Sparkle grew 3 inches (@ 5 weeks) with her first litter, she had 8 in that one. Hermione, Mr. Darcy's mom, grew 3 inches (@5 weeks) in her first litter, she had 10 in that one. I measure them the day we breed them, around the middle right behind the ribcage, and usually if they have a medium to big litter I can see a difference by 4- 41/2 weeks. Saves me a trip to the vet to confirm the pregnancy via ultrasound. And it gives me a an idea of litter size based on how they are growing. Then it's just fun to watch and record the growth each week. I figure Decker has a good chance of having a biggish litter, since her grandmother, Nikki has 9 and 10, and her mother, Tina had 8 and 10.
I just talked to my friend, Sandi, who has Nikki's mother, Camille. She's doing well and was 13 not too long ago. Nikki's sister, Rainey, ws 9 in October, and is enjoying her herding lessons according to Sandi.

Halfway There!

We bred Decker 4 1/2 weeks ago, which means she's halfway through her pregnancy! I'm 99.9% sure she's pregnant which is exciting (and a bit scary). I always worry about them as they get bigger and bigger and closer to the due date. April 11th is d-day for Decker. We can be confident with that date since we did two progesterone tests in the beginning to pinpoint her date of ovulation.
Yesterday we took almost all the dogs to the beach (Rincon Beach) for a photo shoot with our friend, Mary. Very fun. She got some good shots; she's hoping to get some in calendars for next year. It was fun to watch the dogs each have their turn at checking out the sand and surf. Meg was the boldest of the Cardis, which isn't surprising, she's that way everywhere we go. She had great fun chasing driftwood sticks, and was the only one to actually get her feet wet in the surf. Even though we live very close to the ocean, I never take the dogs down to the beach. There's only one beach downtown that allows dogs, and consequently, it often has quite a few dogs running loose on the beach. The other downside to taking the dogs to the beach is that we have natural tar seeps in Carpinteria along the shoreline and trying to get black tar off white feet is just not my favorite endeavor!
Rincon Beach is down the road a bit, and doesn't have tar seeps as such, so it's a bit cleaner. The parking lot is on the bluff so there's a trek down a very long flight of stairs (and back up again) to get there. I used to go to that beach a lot when my Dad was alive as he loved to fish in the surf.
It was fun to be down there again, with the silly dogs.

A Fine Day for a Walk!

Mom and I took Decker and Mr. Darcy down to Ventura, picked up our friend Kathy and her two Parsons, Wyatt and Violet, and took a walk around the Ventura harbor. It was a gorgeous day, if a bit blustery, and the dogs enjoyed themselves. They met other dogs, rolled in the grass, dashed after sunning lizards and greeted other walkers.
Here are a couple of pics of Mr. Darcy, Decker and Violet. (didn't get one of Violet) and one of some sea lions sunning themselves in the water.

Several people have commented on the Parson puppy pic, all sitting nicely together. Mary has figured out that if she lets a litter of 5 week old puppies run around for quite awhile, basically tiring them all out, then she can get a quick window of opportunity to try for a fun group shot. They were not sitting quietly, by any means, as their breeder, Suzanne, and I were on either side, placing them back where we wanted them. As we did this, and scooted out of the shot, Mary would shoot many pics, and amazingly, one was a fun group shot.
Quite an effort but well worth it, as the pictures she gets are so good.

Today, Mom and I went up to Cate School (private high school in Carpinteria) and played with a very cute litter of Parson Russell Terrier puppies who were 5 weeks old today. Mary Arango, who is a great photographer, took pics of the puppies (and of Meg and Gryffin, too who went along for the ride).
Here are a few of the pics that Mary took.
Gryffin is at the top (2), then the PRT pups, then Meg.
The grounds at Cate School are so pretty, and today was a gorgeous day after all the rain yesterday.

We drove down to Wildomar yesterday, and bred Decker to Roger. Now the wait begins.

Decker update

Decker's progesterone was at 3.1
This means that if she progresses in the usual manner we'll breed her on Monday.
I'll head down to Wildomar Monday morning, stopping on the way to do another prog. test.
If need be, we can head back down again on Tuesday, but I'm confident that Monday should do it.
